Hugs was formed as an alternative to abuse in older and neglected horses.

When I think back to my youth all the times the horse came into play as my life took it's turns, ups and downs, it's uncanny. When times seem so bleak that I didn't know which way to turn,  I went out into the barn in the middle of the night, to quietly brush, groom and talk to my beloved horses. This calming effect over and over throughout the years gave me hope and a will to go on. Raising eight children along with several grandchildren I found the horses came into play many times over the years in and out of their lives. Now facing senior years, I looked out back and my great large pastures were bare with the exception of a few show horses still left for my grandchildren's pleasure.

Being rescued by the horses, why not turn that around I thought to myself and rescue them. Now I still go in the barn in the middle of the night, but times have changed. I offer comfort, quiet brushing and a soft voice to let the lost, needy, older, fragile horse know everything is going to be alright. I look out into the pastures now full with romping figures that are humble and grateful that they have somehow found these green pastures. I work my arthritis hands up and down their bodies in attempts to make them look a little more presentable. I mount, (not as much or quite as well as I use to) them working with them to find their best aptitude (I am not sure which one is in more agony anymore). I stand long hours in round pens teaching ground manors or bring back a faded memory so that I can find them the best home possible when and if they leave here.

I work long nights on the web along with an exceptional grand-daughter to locate a network of volunteers and to correspond with other horse lovers. I do this all for one reason only. The love of the Horse.

I take over where my grand leaves off, I have put in hours and hours of cleaning stalls, buckets, and working with horses that have come in through our rescue attempts. Right now I have to rely on the volunteers to help me there for time is not always on my side anymore. Most of the horses are just down right neglected, but some are turned in to us in better condition but looking for a good placement.  Either way I seem to be the one that gets to do the he-ho rowdy riding and I wish I could say I was as calm as grand but truth be told I am not. I speak softly and if that doesn't work I yell my head off. I get friends involved, look for outside help and down right beg once in a while for a helping hand. I attend college, coach our local equestrian team, along with building web-pages to raise money to feed and give medical attention to the horses. I write articles, stories, and march in parades with and or about any of the rescue horse I have at the time. You have to admit I am a busy young woman with a goal in mind. If I could only figure out what it really is :).

We are located just outside of Fowlerville on over 100 acres where we offer a sanctuary. A heaven for older, neglected and abused horses. Not all of our horses are abused and abandoned. We house several that have been turned into us by owners that for one reason or another are no longer able to care of them. They pay (this is not a free service if their horse is healthy, but it is an cost efficient one) for their loved one. They care enough about their horses to see that they are cared for until placement can be made. This can take up to six months. but most take only a couple of months to place. The healthy ones are the easy ones to find a good home for. Take a look around by enjoying the photos on the right, and then give us a call if we can be of service to you.
