As I said meeting Emma was a delight for me.
My first encounter with her personally was
at her Birthday party on July 13th, this
year. I received a birthday invitation by
mail. Emma and her mother had made a
beautiful birthday card with a cute picture
of Emma in a little dress up horsey outfit.
It was going to be Emma's 7th birthday.
What was more remarkable about the whole
situation was that Emma had decided to
forfeit all the girly gadgets and ribbons
around boxes of presents for her birthday in
exchange of donations for our rescue center.
Yes, Emma had made a commitment to our
rescue center and she elected to have all
her presents turned into gifts for the
horses here on the farm. Never in my life
had I heard of such a thing. I was shocked,
surprised, and more than pleased that she
had picked our rescue as her project help.
Emma had requested a list of supplies and
items that we felt would help the horses
here on the farm. I made the wish list and
forwarded it in care of Lisa, Emma's mother.
The invitation in the mail explained how
they were going to handle the whole thing. A
list with item, quantity and amount was
listed. Each person attending the birthday
party would pick an item put in the
quantity and leave a check for the amount.
Lisa, Emma's mother would then order
everything and have it shipped to her home.
I thought about this over and over, I asked
my own grand-daughter who is six years old
the same age as Emma at the time if she
would forfeit all her birthday gifts and
have her friends give gifts to the horses.
But, grandma she said: it's my birthday not
the horses. I might give them one or two of
them, but not all ok!
I smiled as I expected no more. I had to go
and meet Emma in person and see just what
she felt about giving up all her presents
for some horses that she didn't know. When I
arrived the birthday party was over and most had
left the building where it was held. I found
Emma and her mother and was delighted to
shake this little girls hand. The least I
could do was to give her a birthday gift in
return for her generous gesture to us.
My heart was touched as I saw the big smile
on her face and knew there was no selfish
part in this tiny little body of a girl. I
felt so sad on my ride home yet I was
excited to be part of this project.
During the month I was talking with Lisa on
the internet and passing email and finally
getting to meet Emma in person we had a
little filly born to our Pony. A little
black and white thing about 14 inches high.
It was all full of spunk and vinegar.
Pondering for a name for the new filly I
decided at the party not before it but at it
while talking to Emma, we would call our
filly Emma after one of her best
benefactors.
Emma gets to meet Emma
Emma and Lisa showed up one day
unexpected. No phone call, no notice, they
just showed up. "We have a lot of gifts for
you" Lisa said:
I sent Jacob out to help her unload the
items. Oh my gosh! so much stuff came and my
heart did another double take.
I had to get Emma down to the barn and
introduce her to our Emma. I was as excited
as a school girl to see her face and watch
her little hands reach out to pet Emma (the
filly).
I tried to get pictures, but as most things
go that filly just would not stand still
that moment in time. I did manage to get a
hold of it long enough for her to pet it and
I did introduce her to some of the other
residents of the barn. She was happy to sit
on the back of Biggie Style our aging horse
while we Lisa and I tried to get a picture
of her.
Bottom line is that I hope Emma enjoyed her
time here with us and that she never looses
her goodness to help others for that's what
makes it all worth while. Why we work so
hard at doing what we do. The goodness in
people make it worth it, and the
goodness in Emma is a mile long.
I want to thank EMMA, her mother Lisa, her
friends, and everyone else that took
part in this fund raiser. It will go a long
way to help the horses. Medications,
Shampoos, Fly Sprays, Wormers, Detangler and
more. Lots and lots of items we so
desperately need.
I want to extend the invitation to EMMA to
come out as often as she wants to visit us
and see her little companion Emma (the
filly). God Bless Emma and her Family and
Friends!
